Behaviour Tonics offers training for parenting professionals to help parents manage difficult behaviour in children via the 1-2-3 Magic and Emotion Coaching program AND resolve teenage behaviour problems via the Engaging Adolescents program. These one day training courses are offered regularly around the state, OR ‘In House’ workshops can be booked by your organisation or group.

Lesson Framework

  • Coverage of contemporary thinking in child development, particularly the differences between adult and children’s cognitive abilities.
  • Sorting behaviours: what’s involved and the implications for how parents will respond.
  • Common mistakes in addressing misbehaviour, particularly the problem with too much talk and too much emotion.
  • Choosing your strategy – the three choices: do nothing, emotion coach or use 1-2-3 Magic®.
  • Processes of pattern-establishment and change: how negative reinforcement works, the characteristics of patterns, how to interrupt patterns and extinction bursts.
  • Response flexibility in parents and carers: knowing how to avoid getting ‘hooked’ by children’s negative emotions.
  • Using 1-2-3 Magic® & Emotion Coaching: what it’s used for and what it’s not used for, how it’s done properly, how to implement it at home, how to avoid the two biggest mistakes of parenting.

Certification

Becoming a certified parent educator, ensures that our product is only being taught at the highest quality. Certification is $69 per person for the first year and renewed each year at a cost of $49 annually to remain a certified parent educator.

 Engaging Adolescents ™

Practitioner training that equips you to teach parents the skills they need to resolve teenager behaviour problems.

Expected learning outcomes

Knowledge of easy-to-use techniques that parents and carers can use to: enlist adolescents to manage their own behaviour and emotional reactions; build a relationship with their teenager; and deal with unacceptable behaviour.

Lesson Framework

  • The practitioner training course curriculum for working with parents if you choose to certify to become a parent educator
  • The common ground shared by parents.
  • What are reasonable expectations to hold about adolescents?
  • New understandings of adolescence: social landscapes, brain snaps and body makeovers
  • A three-option model and flowchart for decision making to manage a teenager’s problem behaviour
  • Option 1 – Self check for parents: how to bring awareness to family of origin issues, trauma issues and how to avoid over-reacting or becoming continuously angry with their teenager
  • Option 2 – Build their relationships: How to strengthen the bond they have with their teenager and make the best of non-crisis conversations.
  • Option 3 – Tough conversations: how to handle discussing those problems they can’t ignore. This includes how to figure out the problem, how to prepare for engaging their teenager in a tough conversation, and how to set up agreements.
