123 MAGIC AND EMOTION COACHING PRACTITIONER TRAINING
Behaviour Tonics offers training for parenting professionals to help parents manage difficult behaviour in children via the 1-2-3 Magic and Emotion Coaching program. This one day training course is offered regularly around the state, OR ‘In House’ workshops can be booked by your organisation or group.

WHAT TO EXPECT:
At the completion of the one day training course you will have been provided with the knowledge to conduct the 1-2-3 Magic™ & Emotion Coaching program, as either a three-meeting parent education course or to teach the program one-to-one at your centre.
WHATS INCLUDED?
- A comprehensive manual to teach parents 1-2-3 Magic® & Emotion Coaching in a few one-to-one sessions or in a three meeting parent program.
- A CD slideshow parent presentation (not including the 1-2-3 Magic DVDs).
- Session-by-session guidelines for parents meetings.
- AM/PM refreshments and lunch is also provided.
AT THE END OF THE PROGRAM YOU WILL RECEIVE:
- A licence to teach the program for two years. At the end of two years you will need to renew your licence. In the past, this has included purchasing the newest edition of the materials (less than $50.00) and, if you wish to do it, a discounted price on a 1-2-3 Magic™ & Emotion Coaching refresher course.
- A certificate of completion.
- Psychologists receive 7 CPD hours points through the Australian Psychological Society.
COURSE OUTLINE
The one-day 1-2-3 Magic™ & Emotion Coaching practitioner training program covers:
1. An overview of parenting approaches in contemporary Australia.
2. Coverage of contemporary thinking in child development with a particular emphasis on the differences between adult and children’s cognitive abilities.
3. Sorting behaviours, what’s involved and the implications for how parents will respond.
4. Common mistakes in parenting – but particularly the problem with too-much-talk and too-much-emotion.
5. Processes of pattern-establishment and change including, how negative reinforcement works, the characteristics of patterns, how to interrupt patterns and extinction bursts.
6. Response flexibility in parents and carers – knowing how to avoid getting ‘hooked’ by children’s negative emotions.
7. Choosing your strategy – The three choices:
- Do nothing,
- Emotion coach or
- use 1-2-3 Magic.
8. Using 1-2-3 Magic:
- What it’s used for and what it’s not used for
- How it’s done properly
- How to implement it at home
- How to avoid the two biggest mistakes of parenting
9. Developing response flexibility in children:
- Emotion coaching
- Cognitive strategies parents can teach children
10. Encouraging Start behaviours – 20 tips for encouraging wanted behaviour.
Participant agreements must be signed on the morning of the course .
‘In House’ workshops
‘In-House’ workshops offer a discounted opportunity for organisations to train their staff in 1-2-3 Magic® & Emotion Coaching.
Each participant will leave with a comprehensive training manual and personalised slideshow presentation they can use on their laptop when working with families.

- A CD slideshow parent presentation.
- Session-by-session guidelines for parents meetings.
- Lunch and am/pm refreshments are also provided.
AT THE END OF THE PROGRAM YOU WILL RECEIVE:
- A licence to teach the program for two years. At the end of two years you will need to renew your licence. In the past, this has included purchasing the newest edition of the materials (less than $50.00). Some professionals find it helpful to re-train, if you wish to attend the courses again you are eligible for a refresher discount when you attend Engaging Adolescents again.
- A certificate of completion.

- Self check-in, first For parents: family of origin issues, trauma issues and how to avoid over reacting or becoming angry too often with your teenager.
