A brief overview of Four Ways to support behaviour and self-regulation in primary schools

Brad Williams will present a brief overview and Q&A session on the Four Ways 12 month Partnership Program.

Four Ways

Professional learning, coaching and capacity building for primary schools — with equal focus on positive outcomes for staff, students, families and the whole school community.

Four Ways gives primary schools the knowledge, practical skills, resources and support to implement a consistent approach to behaviour support. It begins with a one-day course teaching four responses that guide behaviour and support emotional regulation in the moment, while building self-regulation and executive functioning over time. Coaching, consultancy and capacity building follow, developing a group of in-house champions who sustain the approach across the school.

Built on a referenced evidence base of Australian and international research in self-regulation, emotion coaching, classroom management and school-wide behaviour support the benefits and outcomes are many, including:

  • For students: clear and consistent boundaries, predictable adult responses, more time spent learning, growth in self-regulation.
  • For staff: a documented, evidence-informed approach; less time and energy spent on behaviour; reduced stress; shared professional language.
  • For families: transparency about how behaviour is guided, and strategies that carry across to home.
